The Spirit of Obsession, Oppression, and Possession

Preacher

Pastor Pat Taiwo-Oguntoye

Bible Reading

  1. 2 Samuel 13: 1-16
  2. Psalm 9: 3-10

Sermon

The devil’s devices include Oppression, Obsession and Possession.  Judas exemplified all the three: obsessed with money, possessed by Satan, and oppressed to commit suicide.  Oppression causes depression, low self esteem, giving up, and it controls people to keep out hope and loose the desire to fight on and this literarily affects one’s faith. To be obsessed means when something occupies one’s thoughts constantly and exclusively;  to think or worry about something constantly and compulsively; preoccupy, grip, consume an idea or feeling that completely occupies the mind; uncontrolled idea or emotion; Obsession is running rampant in our society today  this is when you think ( I can’t live without it ) 2 Cor.10v4-5 A strong hold, gripping control over us, forcing us to obey.

In 2 Sam.13v1-16 Amnon says he loves Tamar, pretends to be sick to be alone with her, asks her to lie with him; she refuses but agrees to marry him if he gets the king’s permission; he is so obsessed with her that he forced her and raped her. In his embarrassment he realizes it was lust and he hates her more than he thought he loved her.  Also in Esther 5v11-13 Haman is rich and powerful, possess many things but cannot enjoy anything because Modecai will not bow down to him.  He was obsessed with himself and believed that everyone must bow to him. When you read  Rom.7v18-23 you will see that the will and desire  to do good  may be there but how to perform it might be the problem. One of the problems is the control of spirits making people to be obsessed with money, immorality, and material things. Obsession is real and this is a serious problem today. Obsession leads to oppression and possession.

Oppression causes pain, fear, and control by the cruelty of others, hatred. When one is oppressed, that person is in bondage, and she/he needs deliverance. Oppression is highly stressful, troubling, burdensome pressure on somebody, cruel, domineering, repressive, unfair, overbearing, unjust, and harsh. 1st  Peter 5v8  states : Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.

In John 10v10 the enemy, the devil came to steal, to kill and to destroy. The enemy wants us oppressed that is, to keep us from being the person God wants us to be. The lord wants to deliver you today, In Psalm 9v9 it states that the Lord will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. The following confirms this as well: Acts 10v28; Isa.58v6; 53:7  Jesus is ready to set you free, and whoever He sets free is free indeed.  Don’t oppress others and don’t be oppressed.

Possess means to own or be in control that is direct influences of something, to claim something as your own personal property.

To be devil possessed is to be totally controlled by the devil. In Matt.12v 43-45  the unclean spirit calls human body 'his house'.  The goal of the unclean spirit is to possess people for this reason in Jude 6  the fallen angels/unclean spirits left heaven due to choice but now look to possess a human in hopes of being saved; they have twisted thinking, corrupted wisdom and we need God’s help to deal with them. Ephes. 4v27 states that we should not give place to the devil.  Don’t allow fear, lies, to get hold of you because this will be an open door for the devil to come in.  Yielding to sin opens a door of control and possible future possession if one does not repent.

Dearly beloved Rom.6v16 states that knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

The Lord bless you!
